Steel is Raymond’s medium of
choice. His style of work encompasses a
wide range of artistic creations from extremely time-consuming stainless steel
sculptures to quirky kinetic pieces.
“Steel- it’s good stuff…[he grins] where would
we be without it”. “It’s a great process
working with steel, there is so much to learn, and so many possibilities”.
He combines traditional and
contemporary methods. Integrating the
use of the forge and anvil with more modern engineering techniques enables
Raymond to achieve more than would be possible if he were to utilise a single
method approach.
He is always trying to improve
himself as a metal artist, constantly challenging himself and pushing the
boundaries as to what is possible with the material. “It can be extremely frustrating but also
deeply satisfying when you get it working”.
Raymond’s love for the mountains
and deep concern for protecting our natural environment is an ongoing theme
throughout his work. In contrast to this
more serious side are his pieces that capture his unique sense of humour and
eccentric inventiveness. Raymond enjoys
making people laugh, always daring people to have a go on his ‘contraptions’.
